For my personal list, I’ll write about the albums that struck me and that still evoke something when I hear them, or even when I only see their cover art. It’s a very subjective and eclectic list, and shouldn’t be taken as an objective best-of. Instead, I’ll tell you a bit more about what albums I still like, and try to explain why. This list isn’t ranked either; it’s only ordered in alphabetical order of the bands. Let’s move on!

Black Peaks - Statues
The Black Queen - Fever Daydream
Car Bomb - Meta

Coma Cluster Void have been teasing us for quite some time before their album, Mind Cemeteries, finally dropped. First, it was with pictures of the ten-string guitar, then with names like Mike DiSalvo, and then with musical teasers. It would have been quite easy to miss the mark, in front of such high and intense expectations, but the band more than delivered on their promises, and surpassed what most thought to be unfeasible. The album sets a new bar for rhythmic and harmonic complexity in metal, and it does it so effortlessly, it seems, that I can’t envision anyone challenging their place on the throne anytime soon.

Corima - 天照 (Amaterasu)
Dance Gavin Dance - Mothership
dMu - Synaptic Self
Esperanza Spalding - Emily’s D+Evolution
Fire! - She Sleeps, She sleeps
He Was Eaten by Owls - Chorus 30 from Blues for the Hitchhiking Dead
Little Tybee - Little Tybee
Mammoth - Deviations
The Mercury Tree - Permutations
Öz ürügülüFashion & Welfare
Rorcal - Κρέων (Creon)
Schammasch - Triangle
Shamblemaths - Shamblemaths

That’s it! It’s done. Here’s my personal list of best albums of the year. I tried hard to keep it relatively brief, but there are plenty more albums that were release and that deserve your complete attention. You can start by this list, and then move on to the fifty monthly recommendations we made through the year, and keep your eyes opened because other writers of CTEBCM will be posting their own personal lists as well!

On that note, cheers!

2016 has been a truly amazing year, in music. I’ve never ceased to be surprised and amazed by discoveries and recommendations from friends and readers of the website. Over the course of twelve months, we’ve picked fifty albums that are more than worth your time. To make things easier, we’ve compiled them all into a huge picture, and we’ll put links to all of these albums in this article, so you don’t have to search the website for every separate recommendation we’ve made.

On top of that, we’ll also be writing personal favourites from our little team. Each person will have a different list with its own arguments. These will probably be less daunting than this one right here, and it will also include the many albums we discovered too late to put in our monthly recommendations. They should be coming out throughout this month.

Death Devaluado

Top 25 metal albums of 2016

I guess everybody agrees on the point that 1986 was crucial year for the developement of metal music, especially when thrash and death metal are in question. And here we are, 30 years later... Chernobyl is still radioactive and metal is alive and well! Since there are so many great albums that were released this year, it was a tough task to list the 20 best releases. According to the Chinese calendar, 2016 is the year of the Monkey, but I’ll definitely call it The year of Dissonance, and there’s plenty of reasons for that. I mean, even Korn is back to their noisy roots. So check out our list of haiku reviews down below!

10) Watchtower Concepts of Math – Book One
9) Thoren – Brennenburg

8) Coma Cluster Void – Mind Cemeteries

Com Cluster Void is an international death metal/noise/math band. The intensity of their music is unmatched!  Mind Cemeteries is an excellent debut album, which would be likable to those who worship chaotic and dissonant bands such as Meshuggah, Gorguts, Thoren (haha) and others. In their own words, these guys' music can be described as anti-groove. Gotta love that term! Give this album a chance, ‘cause you surely won’t be disappointed!

7) Teramobil – Magnitude of Thoughts
6) Voivod – Post Society
5) Ulcerate – Shrine of Paralysis
4) Dysrhythmia  – The Veil of Control
3) Deathspell Omega  – The Synarchy of Molten Bones
2) The Claypool Lenon Delirium – The Monolith of Phobos
1) Gorguts – Pleiades’ Dust
